Dentistry involves the full diagnosis and treatment of problems in the mouth and tissues. Being a dentist also requires giving advice and administering care to help prevent future problems. They provide instruction on diet, brushing, flossing, and the use of fluorides. Dentists remove tooth decay, fill cavities, and examine x-rays. They perform corrective surgery on gums and provide treatment for gum disease.

Dentists use a variety of equipment including x-ray machines, drills, mouth mirrors, probes, forceps, brushes, and scapels. They also use lasers, digital scanners, and other computer technologies. Dentists must wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients against infectious diseases. They work 4 to 5 days a week and they usually put in 35 to 40 hours worth of work. Some work could be done on weekends and evenings to meet their patients' needs. Most dentists have their own business and work alone with a small staff. They usually work in a safety office environement.

Training and Other Qualifications

Before you go to dental school you need to have had 2 years of college-level predental education prior to admittance. Most dental schools require that you have recieved your Bachelor's degree. As you progress in college make sure to take biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematic courses. Schools recommend to take as many science courses as possible. Once you have done all these steps, you can take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). Dental schools also require that you have diagnostic abilities and manual skills. Students should have good visual memory, excellent judgement, and good communication skills as well.
